Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Innovation Funders Data Matrix Developed by the Evaluating SL@B research team at Duke University Data was collected from desk research between June and October 2018 Purpose Sampling Limitations Categorization Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Innovation Funders Data Matrix Developed by the Evaluating SL@B research team at Duke University Data was collected from desk research between June and October 2018 The funders matrix was used together with the SL@B portfolio data matrix to better understand how the SL@B portfolio fits within the larger field of MNCH innovation in LMICs, assess the role played by the SL@B program in meeting funding needs in this field, and to identify gaps in the funding landscape for MNCH innovation in LMICs. The data in this funders’ matrix represent publicly available information (in 2018) on a sample of 227 projects supported by 32 MNCH funders compiled between June and October 2018 from the websites of the funders as well as grantees. We selected the funders for this study initially based on input from USAID; and subsequently added to it based on further desk research conducted by the Duke team. Selection criteria included funders who had funded at least one MNCH innovation between 2011 and 2018 and focused on three types of funders: philanthropic, investment (debt and equity), and development aid organizations that fund individual organizations. Based on the collected information, the Duke team developed a matrix using key characteristics (e.g. innovation type, health issue, country targeted) included in the SL@B portfolio review framework. The sample of funders and MNCH projects represented in this matrix does not include the full breadth of MNCH funding from 2011 to 2018. For funders with uniquely large portfolios in this area (e.g. the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, MacArthur Foundation), only a subset of projects was included in the project matrix. This was done to avoid drowning out other, smaller funders in the sample and to allow a fuller picture of the players across the landscape. As a result, the sampling does not fully demonstrate the relative scope of these larger funders in the landscape. Furthermore, this sample largely excludes development aid funders, as the funding often goes directly to governments or to contractors working with governments and is not comparable with the SL@B program’s target recipients. Development aid that went directly to grantees rather than to governments, however, was included from organizations such as GCC, DIV, OPIC, IFC, and NORAD. The use of the term “innovation” is not well defined either in the research literature or among funders, and is applied inconsistently (and sometimes not at all) by funders of MNCH projects. Therefore, the sampling included funded MNCH projects that appear to be innovative in nature but are not necessarily identified as such. The matrix of 227 funded MNCH programs has significant gaps in data due to the limited nature of the publicly available data on these projects. In particular, stage of growth was often not provided and, when possible, this was defined by the research team using available project descriptions. Data on the amount of funding provided was also largely unavailable and as a result was not included as a variable in the study. Categorization The definition tab provides descriptions of all columns included in the funders matrix. This section outlines two of the columns that warrant further clarifications: tentative innovation type and innovation stage. Both of these categorization schemas were selected based on frameworks used and tested by USAID and Duke University. For both columns, the research team categorized projects when possible, based on available project information. Innovations are each classed under one primary category for innovation type and stage. While these categories are comprehensive, they are not mutually exclusive; many could very well fit into more than one at the same time.
